8 Mountain Survival Skills You Can Learn in 4 Days in the Himalaya
Most treks take you up a mountain. A skills trip teaches you how to live on one. Here are the eight things we think every person who loves the outdoors should know, and how they are taught on the ground.
Quick answers
Is there a mountain survival skills course in India? Troovle runs a 4-day mountain-skills trek on Patalsu Peak near Manali (Trip 001, 21–24 November 2026, ₹14,999) teaching eight skills with certified mountain instructors.
What survival skills can you learn in 4 days? Reading the weather, cold and altitude, pitching a camp, fire without a lighter, cooking at altitude, the night sky, summit navigation and mountain first aid.
1. Reading the weather
Mountain weather changes fast. You learn what cloud types and wind shifts mean, how afternoon build-ups form, and when an approaching change means it is time to turn back.
2. Cold and altitude
How to layer, how to sleep warm, how to spot the early signs of altitude sickness in yourself and others, and what to do about them. Read more in our altitude sickness guide.
3. Pitching a camp
Where to pitch and where not to: wind, slope, water and rockfall. Then how to pitch a tent tight enough to hold through a cold, windy night. You pitch your own.
4. Fire without a lighter
Finding dry wood at altitude, building a fire that catches, lighting it with a ferro rod rather than a flame, and keeping it alive. Then leaving no trace when you are done. Here is how it works.
5. Cooking at altitude
Water boils at a lower temperature up high (around 86–87 °C at 4,000 m), so food cooks slower even though the pot bubbles sooner. You learn how to plan meals, save fuel and still eat well. You help cook the group dinner yourself.
6. The night sky
Finding north by the Pole Star, recognising the main constellations and the stories behind them, and photographing the sky on a phone, with an astronomer and a telescope at camp.
7. Summit navigation
Pace, breathing, reading the trail, and setting a hard turnaround time, then actually respecting it.
8. Mountain first aid
Cold injuries, twists, cuts, and how help actually reaches you when there is no phone signal.
How it is taught
Every skill is taught with your hands, in the place you need it: tent pitching at camp, fire at camp, navigation on the summit trail. On the last day, teams race to build a shelter and boil water using everything they have learned.
