Treks Near Manali in November: What Is Open and What Is Closed
November is the month most Manali trek pages get wrong. The big summer treks are closing, the snow has not fully settled, and the days are short. Here is an honest picture of what is open, what is not, and what to check before you book.
Quick answers
Which treks near Manali are open in November? Usually Patalsu Peak, Lamadugh meadow (early November), Jogini Falls, Kheerganga and Prashar Lake. Hampta Pass, Bhrigu Lake and Beas Kund are normally closed or not recommended.
Is Hampta Pass open in November? Normally no. Hampta Pass is a summer and early-autumn crossing, usually run from June to early October. Always check current conditions.
- Short version: the high passes are mostly closed; shorter treks and some ridge summits stay open
- Day temperatures: cool to mild in the valley, below freezing at high camps at night
- Daylight: roughly 10–11 hours, so walking days start early and end early
- Always check: the current weather, road status beyond Solang and Gulaba, and the operator’s safety plan
Why November is different
From June to October, Manali is surrounded by open trails. By November the first heavy snow usually arrives on the passes, the meadows turn brown and gold, and the crowds thin out. The road beyond Gulaba towards Rohtang typically closes for winter around mid-November, and most operators stop running the classic pass crossings. What is left is a smaller set of treks that stay below the worst snow or follow ridges that clear quickly after a storm.
Usually closed or not recommended in November
- Hampta Pass (around 4,270 m). A summer and early-autumn crossing, normally run from June to early October. Snow on the pass and the Chatru side makes it a winter mountaineering route rather than a trek.
- Bhrigu Lake (around 4,300 m). The meadows above Gulaba get snowed in and the lake freezes. Most operators stop batches by October.
- Beas Kund (around 3,700 m). The approach from Solang through Dhundi and Bakarthach is exposed to avalanche-prone slopes once winter snow builds up.
If an operator sells any of these in late November, ask exactly which route they take, what snow equipment they carry and what their turnaround rule is.
Usually open in November
- Patalsu Peak (around 4,220–4,250 m). A ridge summit above Solang that is walkable on clear days into late autumn. Few operators run regular November batches, so check who is actually going. Read our Patalsu in November guide.
- Lamadugh meadow (around 3,100–3,300 m). A steep day hike from Manali through deodar forest, best in early November before heavy snow.
- Jogini Falls (from Vashisht). An easy half-day walk, open year-round unless it is icy.
- Kheerganga (around 2,950 m) in the Parvati Valley, a few hours’ drive from Manali. Cold at night but usually walkable.
- Prashar Lake (around 2,700 m) near Mandi, on the way to or from Manali. A short trek with big views, often with early snow.

How to choose a safe November trek
- Pick a route, not a brand name. Ask where the high camp is, how high it is and what happens if it snows.
- Ask about the turnaround time. A good team names one, such as 10:00 AM on summit day, and sticks to it.
- Check the sleeping gear. You want a four-season tent and a sleeping bag rated well below the expected night temperature, ideally around −15 °C.
- Know the group size and ratio. Smaller groups move faster and are easier to manage when the weather turns.
- Read the cancellation and weather policy before you pay anything.
What to pack differently
November needs proper winter layers, not just a warm jacket: thermals, a fleece, a puffer and a waterproof shell, plus gloves, a beanie and broken-in boots. Our winter packing list for Himachal covers it item by item.
The bottom line
November is a good month for a first winter trek if you pick a route that suits the season and a team that plans for the cold. It is a bad month to push a summer pass. Conditions change from year to year, so always check the latest weather and road updates before you travel.
